What I(saiah) Wore

Isaiah is Janey's little boy.  The one I get to see being born!  Last summer I decided to try sewing an entire garment by hand -  no machine.  I worked on it every Tuesday when me, my brother, Janey and her older two boys went to volunteer at an historic village (a lot of fun if you ever get the chance!).  I didn't know if Janey was having a boy or a girl at that point, but I figured overalls can be accessorized either way. Plaid shirt and cap for a boy, frilly pink and a bonnet for a girl.  The shoes make a difference too - wellingtons for a boy, bright sandals for a girl.  Then winter came, I got a job and forgot that I had these sitting in my sewing room waiting to be finished for Isaiah.
So the day after he was born I went and dug them up and finished them on the machine - cancelling my goal of doing them all by hand. I just sewed the two curved seams and the button holes with the machine, so I got close, still have to try not using a machine AT ALL one of these days.  Maybe when we drive across the country this November.  I was going to give them too her like that, but decided they really needed top stitching for a finishing touch - they are jean after all.  So they didn't end up looking hand sewn at all.  But I guess that's probably a good thing anyways!
I had found a little driving cap at our thrift store on bag day a couple of years earlier, and I was just going to buy a little plaid shirt to make the outfit complete.  I ended up playing hide-and-go-seek with the different parts of this outfit for almost a month though!  First I had the hat but couldn't find the overalls, then I found the overalls and couldn't find the hat.  Then I bought a new hat and a shirt to match and couldn't find the pants again!  I was actually really excited, I went to Super Store to pick up a shirt and found this matching cap too!  I've never seen these hats (or any like them) there before or since - thanks God!  Anyways, I finally got it all together and gave it too her a while ago.

I don't usually like sewing for little boys, because you have to put so much work into a garment to make it super-cute, while little girls' clothes don't need hardly anything to make them adorable.  But I like the way these turned out, simple yet cute.  I can't wait to see Isaiah in them once he gets a little bigger!
Kristin insisted that I put this picture up.  I was pinning everything onto our bulletin board to take pictures and asked her to go grab me a soother to complete the layout.  My hands were busy when she got back with it, so where else was I supposed to get her to put it?
"You're always complaining that people think you're twelve and won't take you seriously, but if still suck soothers, who can blame them!?"  Gotta love an eight year old's logic!

In His grace,
Laurel
