Swimming in Thrift Store Finds

No, really...
I was going through the little girls' section of our thrift store, and look what I found!  I almost never look through the little girls' section because we have bins of clothes that Kaitlin and I grew out of and saved for the little girls, so they almost never need anything more.  And if they do it's not stuff you want to buy at a thrift store.  But Kristin had stained her white blouse and needed a new one.  I was looking with her and what to our wonder eyes should appear...  This swim dress was in with the blouses!  I was shocked, because you can never find swimsuits this modest, especially in our thrift store!  The skirt comes to the middle of her knee in the front and scoops up to just above her knees on the sides.  Underneath there is just a swimsuit bottom (sewn in).  We would have preferred shorts, but we'll take it!!  Plus, it was Bag Day, so we paid virtually nothing for it!
It was a little low in front and back (there is a "v" in the back too).  I wanted to just put a triangle patch in to raise the neckline, so I went looking through my fabric stash for any lycra fabric (I don't usually have any - it's so expensive), and found this flowered stuff.  I have no idea where it came from - but doesn't it match perfectly?  The best part was, there was lots of it!  So Kristin said she'd like sleeves on it too if I could, and I figured the easiest thing to do would be to make a t-shirt she can put on under the swimsuit.  That way she can still get in easily, and I can make it extra coverage, not just passably modest coverage.
I know, that shoulder seam is bad, she wanted to put it on "right now" and didn't want to wait for me iron the seams "it's just a swimsuit - you are so weird Ella, who irons their swimsuits!".  I stretched the hems as I sewed them to give them a ruffley effect, but it made the neckline a little gapey, I think I need to put a couple of little darts or pleats in.  The shirt just comes to the bottom of her ribs, where it is kept in place by an elastic and then she puts the swim dress on over top.  It is a little tight for her, but she can wear it this summer and then we'll have it for Sarah when she gets a little bigger.
When you live on a Bible camp situated on a lake, a swimsuit is kind of an essential wardrobe item, but modest ones are so hard to come by!  They do make them, but there is NO WAY we could afford anything from any of the modest boutiques.  For a while we had given up trying and just got whatever was cheap and wore shorts and a t-shirt over it.  But this summer all four of us girls will be able to boast completely modest swimwear, and Kaitlin spent $30 for hers - more than any of the rest of us!  God is so good!

What do you wear swimming?
In His Grace,
Laurel
