I have always really liked this outfit from Roman Holiday. Her other dresses are a little over the top (OK, a lot over the top), but this one is so cute and feminine and modest and real. I was more than a little disappointed when she rolled up the sleeves and undid the top button.
I don't know what they did to skirts in the 40s and 50s to make them swish so beautifully, but this skirt really does. I fell in love with it the first time I watched the movie when I was 11 or so and immediately decided that I had to make one for myself. By the next summer I had myself a pattern and a bolt of fabric. I took over poor Micheline's living room with my sewing machine and fabric and set to work, not comprehending what that "full circle" on the pattern envelope meant. Oops. I decided to make my first skirt for my sister whose birthday was coming up (hence sewing in Micheline's living room, not ours). that way, if it turned out - great, and if it didn't, that was her problem because it was her skirt. Honestly, that's what I thought - wasn't I a sweet child?
But it did turn out pretty well, despite my attempt at hemming a "full circle" skirt (is that what it means!), and it became Kaitlin's. But when I went to make one for myself a few months later - that pattern was gone. No one knows what became of it, but it hasn't been seen since. Well, about a year ago Kaitlin didn't want it any more and it became mine!!! Then I found this great shirt at the thrift store on bag day and all I need now is a pair of cream coloured wrist length gloves. I just realized I don't have a picture of her gloves, but she was wearing a pair when she first ran away.
What I'm wearing: ruffle-y shirt (thrift store), skirt (made by me), knee socks (dollar store), 1940s pumps (Wal-Mart)
I thought of wearing Roman Sandals, same as Miss Hepburn wore, but decided with snow still on the ground, it was possibly not the best idea in the world. :P
In his grace,
Laurel
I love this outfit! So pretty! You aren't the only one who has hair moods, my hair often looks red or brown depending on the lighting. ;)
